Rights and obligations

Supervisor and student should together work out a time- and work plan for the Master's Thesis.

The supervisor is appointed for a period of two semesters.

The student

  • should contact the supervisor immediately after the supervision contract has been signed.
  • should be well prepared for the supervision sessions.

  • must follow the agreed upon work plan and keep the supervisor continuously updated on the progress of the thesis.

  • must give due notice if he/she has to cancel a session.

  • should contact the study administration in case of any questions or concerns about the supervision arrangement, or any cooperation problems with the supervisor.

  • must write a short progress rapport at the end of the 3rd semester.

  • should attend the information meetings.

  • must follow the general rules and regulations that apply to the work on the master thesis.

The supervisor

  • must be acquainted with all relevant work-ethical guidelines.

  • is required, after initial contact has been made, to set up the first regular supervision session as early in the semester as possible, and at the latest within four weeks of initial contact.

  • is required to offer the student up to 10 sessions in total, evenly spread out throughout the two semesters the contact is stipulated for.

  • is required to show up well prepared for the thesis sessions.

  • is required to discuss and assess the research question, the framework of the thesis, the method used in the thesis and give advice on how the investigation/analysis should/can be conducted as well as to make sure that the investigation/analysis is feasible to conduct in the time the student has available.

  • is required to readand give detailed comments to chapter drafts at least once for every chapter, but is free to assess how thorough the guidance of the revised chapters and the master thesis as a whole needs to be.

  • is required to keep continuously updated on the progress of the thesis and assess the progress in relation to the agreed upon time schedule/workplan.

  • must give notice in due time if the time of the session needs to be rescheduled.

  • must make sure that personal data is processed and registered correctly, according to the guidelines of the Norwegian Social Science Data Services (NSD).

Postponement or a temporary stop of supervision

  • Students who wish to postpone or temporarily stop/pause the individual supervision must agree this with their supervisor and the department.
  • A pause or postponement can only happen for one semester.
  • The student must notify the study administration at the department immediately when they would like a pause or to postpone.
  • There is no opportunity to apply for a new supervisor with a new topic if you have already had supervision. This applies regardless of how many meetings you have had.
