ARENA Tuesday seminar: Michal Ovádek

Michal Ovádek presents the chapter Contested Competences in the European Union: How Politics and Law Shape What the EU Can('t) Do at the Tuesday Seminar on 17 January 2023.

Abstract

This chapter defines the primary sample of legislative acts used throughout the book and investigates temporal patterns of EU competence use by means of event study designs and quantitative description. In addition to exploring general trends, the chapter discusses developments in four areas of EU competence: the internal market, agriculture, international trade and the reservoir power. The chapter highlights interactions between law and politics as central to understanding the dynamics of EU competence use.
