ARENA Tuesday Seminar: Christopher Lord

Christopher Lord presents the chapter Taking back Control. How Brexit meant much more than Brexit at the Tuesday Seminar on 12 March 2024.

Abstract

This is not written as a seminar paper. It is, rather, the second chapter of a book that I am finishing on the role of the ‘Norwegian model’ in Brexit. I argue that the UK’s choice between the Norwegian model and other ways of relating to the EU from the outside has been as important as the UK’s decision to leave or remain a member of the European Union. The choice between different ways of not being a member has shaped what kind of a society, economy, political system and international actor the UK is likely to be after Brexit. To make that argument I distinguish different ideas of what it is to be a self-governing people with control of its own laws and borders; different ideologies of Brexit; different understandings of the British constitution; different conceptions of the UK’s territorial settlement; different realignments in British politics since 2016; and different ways in which ‘Brexit Britain’ can now respond to any need to pool sovereignty with other democracies to deal with problems of international interconnectedness.
