About the grants
The grants amount to 20,000 NOK each. 10,000 at the beginning of the period and 10,000 after completion.

Every year ARENA offers student grants to students writing their master thesis on topics related to our research interests. The successful candidates will get their own office space at ARENA, a supervisor from the relevant project and a grant of 20,000 NOK. This year, two of ARENA’s projects offer student grants to successful candidates.
Contribute to ARENA projects
One of the grants is connected to the COMPLEX project, which studies the effects of international treaties on national law. They are looking for a student interested in writing their thesis on EU law and Norwegian interpretation of EU laws. The project has gathered extensive data from interviews with public administrators, NAV case files and the KODEM survey, which you can make us of in your thesis. Norwegian is a requirement for this project.
The other grant is connected to NORMS. This project, in cooperation with the Institute for Social Research, explores international norms in deportation and are looking for a student exploring policy responses to irregular migration.
Become part of the professional community
Previous students have made great use of the academic environment and the provided office space at ARENA. Live Johanna Steinsdatter Øverhaug received an ARENA student grant in 2022/2023 for her project on the so-called LGBT-free zones in Poland. In her thesis she explored if EU’s response of withholding funds has contributed to the repeal of these zones.
"The ARENA grant was a great opportunity," Øverhaug says.
"In addition to allowing me to focus more on my study, I was warmly welcomed into an inspirational research college. I highly recommend other master students to apply for the ARENA grants."
Publish your thesis in ARENA publication series
There is also a possibility for successful applicants to publish their thesis as part of the ARENA-report series. Previous students have published reports and blog posts based on their theses:
