Extremism, Communication and the Media: Debunking the Myths

Many claims are being made about the relationship between extremism and the media, particularly in relation to the contribution of the internet and social media to the aims of radical groups. To what extent, however, do such claims hold up to critical scrutiny?

This talk by Professor Cristina Archetti (Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo) debunks the myths that appear to inform most current approaches to the countering of extremist communication and narratives. It particularly criticizes: the tendency to rely on outdated models of communication; the disproportionate (an unnecessary) focus on messaging; the demonization of the internet and social media; the failure to examine communication within the broader context of political mobilization.
