Foreign fighters have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years, with both academic and media attention focused on the phenomenon of individuals travelling abroad to join ISIS and the terrorist threat they seemingly posed upon their return.
This has however resulted in a dearth of research on foreign fighters as a more general phenomenon beyond Islamism and Middle Eastern theatres. The significance of this lacuna has become even more obvious this year with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which again trained focus on foreign fighters on both sides of the conflict, and illustrated the need for generalized expertise on the phenomenon.
This workshop will concentrate and coordinate this research in any depth, and will gather the world’s leading scholars and experts who publish on foreign fighters in different conflicts.
This workshop is closed and for invitees only.
