Webinar on the Far Right in Malaysia

Lecturer: Munira Mustaffa

The Far Right in Malaysia

What does the Far Right look like in a country like Malaysia? The talk will serve to demystify the far right movements in Southeast Asia and explain how they did not just develop overnight as a form of “reciprocal radicalisation”, but in fact have extensive pre-war historical roots in the search for post-colonial identities and claiming the birthright to a homeland. The talk will also discuss the characteristics of Malaysia’s far right movements – ranging from those that were formed before the advent of social media to those that emerged from the digital landscape, along with their very diverse profiles. The talk will also address broad questions of why the phenomenon would matter in terms of policy and security.

Munira Mustaffa is a Non-Resident Fellow at Newlines Institute for Strategy & Policy, an independent policy think tank in Washington DC. She is also a Fellow at Verve Research, an independent research collective focused on the relationship between militaries and societies in Southeast Asia. She has worked professionally as a security and intelligence practitioner, and researcher within the security industry in the private, government and military sectors since 2014. Her commentary and work on terrorism, extremism, and cyber warfare have been published by several publications, including NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence (STRATCOMCOE) and Global Network on Extremism and Technology (GNET) Insights.

The webinar will have one short presentation followed by a Q&A session, moderated by Eviane Leidig.
