About the speakers

JM Berger is a writer and researcher focused on extremism. He is the author of four critically acclaimed books, including Extremism (2018) and Optimal (2020). Berger is a research fellow with VOX-Pol and a PhD candidate at Swansea University’s School of Law, where he studies extremist ideologies. His research encompasses extremism and terrorism, propaganda, and social media analytical techniques. As a consultant for social media and security companies and government agencies, he has conducted research and training on issues and policies related to homegrown terrorism, online extremism, advanced social media analysis, and countering violent extremism.

Dr. Sarah Pessin is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Denver, where she also serves as Interfaith Chair. Pessin is a teacher-scholar dedicated to civic engagement, justice and equity, hope and responsibility, diversity and inclusion, religious inclusivity, interdisciplinary innovation, curricular-meets-co-curricular creativity, and strengthening higher ed structures of shared governance. She served as the Director of the Center for Judaic Studies from 2008-2019 and helped create the campus’ Holocaust Memorial Social Action Site.

Methods and ethics right webinar series

This webinar is part of the series 'Researching the far right: methods and ethics', co-organized by C-REX and PERIL (American University).

This webinar series aims to initiate and facilitate a much needed discussion about the methodological, ethical, political, personal, practical and professional issues and challenges that arise when researching far right parties, protest movements, and violent actions.

The webinars last one hour and take place every second Thursday of the month. The webinar will have one or two (short) presentations followed by a Q&A session.
