Current research

Rune Ellefsen is a researcher in the HateCycle project, which explores the patterns of hate crime, its consequences and society's responses to it.

Ellefsen has conducted research on the policing of radical protest movements, politically motivated crime and political violence. He has explored these phenomena in relation to new policies and practices to prevent radicalization and violent extremism in Norway, Sweden and England. Ellefsen often combines analytical perspectives from research on social movements, policing and political violence.

Ellefsen is also a researcher at RusForsk (Oslo University Hospital) where he leads qualitative research on the first-hand experiences of heroin-assisted treatment in Norway.

Background

2019-2022: Postdoctoral fellow in the project "Radicalisation and resistance" at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, led by Sveinung Sandberg. The research included Muslims' everyday prevention of radicalisation, experiences of anti-Muslim hostility and their everyday resistance to this in Norway.

2018-2019: Led the Norwegian pilot project "Countering violent extremism in the Nordic countries: Learning from experiences in Norwegian and Swedish municipalities" in collaboration with Swedish scholars. The project specifically investigated the Norwegian authorities' measures to tackle militant Islamist milieus.

2018: Researcher in the Swedish research project "Radicalisation and counter-radicalisation" which examined radical left-wing activists and the governments' countering measures against them in Sweden.

2012-2017: PhD  Candidate. Defended the thesis Performing and policing transgressive protest in 2018 at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, University of Oslo. The dissertation examines the reciprocal relationship between a radical protest movement in England that challenged and broke the law, and the extensive state-private control that was initiated to tackle the movement. This was explored through a case study in England that combined qualitative interviews with radical animal rights activists and the policing actors, observation in criminal trials against the activists, and document analysis.

Before 2012, Ellefsen conducted research in the field of green criminology, and was, among other things, co-editor of the book Eco-Global Crimes and author of the book Med lov til å pine.
