Learning outcome
This course seeks to equip you with the following
- an understanding of the fundamental concepts of learning in a higher education context
- techniques and strategies for promoting active learning
- opportunities for enhancing your pedagogical practice
- a starting point for a pedagogical portfolio for documenting your teaching
Organisation
The total workload is 20 hours, including preparations. The development of your teaching competencies will be advanced through the systematic application of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) framework.
The course is designed as an interactive workshop that emphasizes active participation and where you're expected to do the assigned tasks.
The course is delivered through two sessions:
Session 1: Teaching and learning in Higher education
In the first session, we will touch upon theories of learning, different views on the role of the teacher and different form of teaching and how it affects students learning. We invite you to reflect on how different forms of learning activities are suited for different topics.
There will be assigned readings and assignments in Canvas. Note that your before the first session will need to observe a teaching session of your own choice. You will make a first draft of a "dummy" course.

Session 2: Supervision and Assessment
In the second session, we look closer into assessment and feedback.
You keep working on the "dummy course". There will also be a grading assignment.

Target group
This course is aimed at PhD candidates and who have little or no teaching experience. The course is available for all PhD candidates admitted to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences or the Faculty of Humanities.
