Universal Design

Universal Design is the design and composition of things, the environment and digital content so that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability.

What does digital design mean for teaching?

All teaching material you publish on the web, in Canvas and on other digital services here at UiO shall be universally designed. In practice this involves the correct use of headings, colour and that you shall publish a text alternative with images, video and sound.

Pilot project: Universal design for learning

EILIN is collaborating with USIT on a project for universal design in teaching. The project will increase knowledge about and proficiency in incorporating universal design at SV Faculty:

  • How can universal design improve learning outcomes for everyone, rather than at the cost of some or all?
  • What resources do departments need to ensure they employ universal design?
  • What is the experience of students and teaching staff?
  • What barriers stand in the way?

In the project we will pilot 1-3 courses, which will be designed according to the requirements of the universal design law. The courses will be evaluated with a questionnaire for the students and interviews with teaching staff and adminstrators.

The project will run from Autumn 2022 until Spring 2025. The project has received funding from SK-ITU.
