Eilert Sundt Anniversary Lecture 2017: Climate, conflict and economic development: The next 50 years

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Based on his own research and that of others, Edward Miguel will discuss how extreme climate changes impact the economy.

Edward Miguel is a professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley, specifically holding the positions of Oxfam Professor of Environmental and Resource Economics, and Faculty Director of the Center for Effective Global Action.

In his Eilert Sundt lecture titled "Climate, conflict and economic development: The next 50 years", Edward Miguel will examine how climate change leads to resource scarcity and can result in violent conflict.

Using Africa as an example

Miguel will focus particularly on the consequences for Africa's economic development, a topic that has occupied him for years. Miguel has conducted research on the economic impacts of violence, the significance of ethnic divides, and the connections between health, education, environment, and poverty alleviation. He has conducted fieldwork in countries such as Kenya, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and India.

Edward Miguel is widely known for his two books: Africa's Turn? and Economic Gangsters: Corruption, Violence and the Poverty of Nations.
