Collaborative writing on the master's thesis

At the Department of Economics at the University of Oslo two students can choose to write the master's thesis together. Most students write their master's thesis alone. If you want to write together with another student, you must adhere to the following rules and regulations;

  • That the thesis is a collaborative effort should be clear in the students project plan.
  • The thesis is submitted as one work, and it is assessed as one work.
  • The students must make it clear in the thesis itself that it is written by two authors who have made equal contributions. This can be done in the preface.
  • The thesis will be graded more strictly.
  • The thesis should have a greater scope than individual theses, but not double the length, as higher quality standards are also required.
  • Students who write together will have two separate oral exams. These exams will be held one after the other with the same committee, and the grades will be announced individually for each student after the last student has finished.
  • The students may end up with different grades.
  • If both students appeal, the normal appeal procedure will be followed, with the same appeals committee handling both appeals. If the appeal allows for a new oral exam for both candidates, it will be conducted as before.
  • If only one student appeals, the normal appeal procedure will be followed for that student. However, the appeal should not be processed until the appeal deadline for the other student has passed. The outcome for the appealing student will not have any consequences for the student who did not appeal.
  • Students who write together will receive the same amount of guidance as an individual student writing alone.
