The project will be organized in three main research groups from the UK, Austria, and Norway, and will focus on Europe.  Formally it is led from Norway by Kalle Moene, director at ESOP.

The project aims to address:

  • How external shocks from increased global competition, technological change and international mobility affect citizens via the internal organization of welfare institutions
  • How the diverse welfare state and labor market institutions in different European countries adjust to these external forces, and what are the economic and social consequences for citizens
  • How the political and economic potential for reform of the Welfare State, and the public support for reform, is determined by economic circumstances and social conditions.

The project will start in February 2015, and planned duration is 36 months.
