I løpet av de siste 30 årene har sosial likhet og trygghet for arbeidstakere blitt opprettholdt i Norden, og den økonomiske veksten har vært på nivå med USA. I USA har økende ulikhet gått hånd i hånd med sosial splittelse og redusert velferd. I kontrast har de fleste europeiske land kun opplevd en beskjeden økning i ulikhet, men en kraftig økning i arbeidsledigheten. Samtidig har de nordiske landene i den samme perioden kombinert sosial likhet med god makroøkonomisk utvikling og full sysselsetting. For å studere hvilken rolle ulikhet spiller må vi først se på hva økonomisk teori predikerer for disse samfunnene. Vi kan deretter konfrontere de teoretiske hypotesene med de observerte mønstrene og trekke riktige konklusjoner.
