Hilde Solli

PhD candidate

About the project

My PhD-project will address socially just climate transitions in cities. The empirical focus will be on the city of Oslo. To achieve Oslo’s climate goals, everyday mobility has to be practically zero-emission by 2030. Zero emission mobility is not possible without policy interventions. However, this shift may have different implications and consequences for different people. On this backdrop, the motivation of this thesis is to contribute to the literature on how cities can meet the urgent need for climate action without socially unjust consequences.

Funding and collaboration

The Research Council of Norway funds the project as a public sector PhD. When I do not work on my PhD, I work with climate mitigation measures at the Agency for Climate at Oslo Municipality.

Academic interests

I am interested in different perspectives on justice, and the choices people can and do take and in everyday life. Places varies when it comes to mobility options for commuting and other daily travels. At the same time, people have different mobility resources, e.g. some people have a car and others do not. This give different opportunities for everyday choices. Mitigation measures will influence these opportunities and different people differently.

Background

I am a PhD candidate at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography at the University of Oslo. I also work with mobility, urban planning and climate governance at the Agency for Climate in Oslo Municipality. I used to work as a mobility consultant in Urbanet Analyse. From 2008 to 2014, I worked with performance audits at the Auditor General, Norway. Earlier I worked at the Norwegian Institute for Public Health (2005-2008).
