Art in/between Spaces

Seminar and workshop on non-institutional approaches to art in public space.

Arrangement i Domus Bibliotheca

How do we creatively change the city? Street artists, graffiti writers, and artist-activists transform the city every day through their creative actions. What makes these art forms so interesting is that they continue to elude precise definitions, are constantly evolving, and remain the topic of vibrant public debate.

Street art and graffiti are often situated in the physical in-between spaces of the city and consistently in-between fluctuating social, cultural, and political spaces. Bringing together academics, artists, practitioners, and the public, this event aims to better understand the conditions that make street art and graffiti happen … or not happen.

Taking Oslo’s Street Art Action Plan as a starting point, this one-day seminar examines how art takes (and makes!) space in the city. We will hear from experts on the contradictions and opportunities of policy, learn about the practical side from artists and organisers, and involve the audience in a workshop that imagines how they might creatively change the city.

Kunst i mellomrom – Art in/between Spaces is for anyone with interests in graffiti, street art, and non-institutional approaches to art in public space.

The seminar is part of the official program for Oslo’s Løkka-Lykke street art festival. The seminar includes talks by Dr. Emma Arnold (University of Oslo), James Finucane (Street Art Oslo) and Laima Nomeikaite (Roskilde University and University of Southeast Norway). The afternoon workshop will be led and guided by artists and experts from Oslo’s street art and graffiti environment.

The event is in English. Light refreshments will be served.
