Optimism, pessimism and the role of hope in transformations to sustainability

How do you view the possibilities for a sustainable future? What is the role of hope in activating actions for sustainability?  What is the difference between optimism, pessimism and realism?

This week we want to discuss different views of the future and emotions connected to this. What are the implications of being either optimistic or pessimistic? Maria Ojala (2013) writes about hope and differentiates between constructive hope and hope based on denial. She show how the different types of hope can have different outcomes for pro-environmental behavior in her article Hope and climate change: the importance of hope for environmental engagement among young people.

The Climate and Society Forum is a space where people who are interested in climate change can engage with specific themes and exchange thoughts and perspectives on our individual and collective role in transformations to sustainability.
