The article looks into the challenge of integrating the SDGs, recognizing the inherent trade offs and potential synergies between goals. The authors speculate that reaching the transformative potential of the SDGs might be less about what is done and more about how goals, targets and indicators are approaches and worked with. They use musical metaphors to explore different models of engagement - including 12-tone, fugal compositions and improvisation. They conclude that engaging with both our minds and our hearts – with expert knowledge and skill as well as with intuition and courage – is necessary for the SDGs to actively contribute towards sustainable futures.
