Abstract

For the past decade we have taken an interest in the democratic attempts to redistribute power to benefit the weakest and documented how these attempts have paradoxical implications in health care.3-5 Building on the so-called governmentality school, we wish to draw attention to a political determinant of health that seems to be overlooked by Marten and colleagues.6 In modern liberal states, people are confronted with a non-negotiable obligation to manage their own freedom.
