URIX - The Status of Islam in Western-Europe

The entire program dealt with the debate concerning the position of Islam in Western-Europe. Katrine Fangen comments upon what circumstances can be influencing the dominating view of Muslims negatively, e.g. terror attacks and times of economic recession. In the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks, research shows that Muslims have experienced more discrimination. Fangen underlines the importance of an open debate about religion in a democratic society, and points to the challenge of generalizations that often surge based upon criminal actions taken by a few Muslims, and that are made into a characteristic of a whole population group, which further evolves into an unfounded fear of a population.
