The research area of Politics, Organizations and Work includes topics such as Democracy, Politics and policy studies. We study how working life has evolved, new collaborative relationships, discrimination in the labour market, trade union strategies, global production networks. This also includes studies of Nordic models for working life, leadership, policy formulation, organizational models, the welfare model and institutional change.

Examples of current research problems include:

  • Politics and policy making encountering experts and knowledge. How is knowledge used in policymaking? What is the significance of expertise for designing reforms and policy measures?
  • Institutional change. Organisations and institutional relations are changing. How can institutions emerge, change or fall apart? How does the encounter between different institutional logics play our when organisations change or reforms are implemented?
  • A changing working life. How does new work relations – temporary and precarious work, digitalisation, globalisation and sustainability – affect governance, co-determination and trust between the social partners?

At ISS, we challenge established theories within organizational and working life studies and contribute to advanced empirical and theoretical studies in work, politics and organization. The research area includes methods such as document studies and discourse analysis, comparative case studies, ethnography, interviews and focus group methodology, participatory observation, panel data and survey methods.
