According to the 2017 US National Security Strategy, Moscow and Washington are engaged in a “great powers competition”. At the same time, Russian and American nuclear arsenals combined still represent more than 90% of world’s total. With this in mind the parties should be interested in managing the competition in the safest possible way. However, the arms control architecture, which previously provided a safety net, is falling apart. In order to maintain the relative stability, the parties will have to consider the issues and possible trade-offs, which will be on the negotiation table when or if Moscow and Washington once again decide to pursue arms control, and evaluate possible alternatives like more flexible political agreements.

Although ubiquitous globally, psychotic disorders show strong social gradients by both individual attributes and geographical region, established via ground-breaking psychiatric epidemiology beginning in the U.S. and subsequently exported to Europe and beyond. Despite almost a century of research on this topic, persistent inequalities in the risk of psychotic disorders by both person and place remain, with potentially vital implications for etiology, public health and service provision.

The European Union is often described as a vanguard of a law-based world order, and since its inception it has proclaimed an ambition to promote justice at the global level. But how can the EU contribute in the present context of contestation over global norms?

How does architecture contribute to the production of truly public spaces in the city today? What types of knowledge are needed, and are today's planning and decision-making processes suited for the design of socially inclusive public spaces in the city? Whose city is it really?

Jens Richter from Estudio Herreros will give the introductory talk to this Cities and Society seminar, followed by a panel discussion with invited architects and urban scholars.
