Change and stability in cognitive, emotional, and social functioning during the life course, and how strains and trauma can disturb normal development. Factors that can protect against negative effects of strains and trauma, particularly social relations.

Development, change, and treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Daily dynamics in cognitive, emotional, and social processes and how this dynamic is associated with mental health or psychopathology.

Technology as adjunct to treatment of PTSD

Statistical analyses for longitudinal data, particularly for experience sampling methodology (ESM), as well as network analysis.

Background

Birkeland works as a researcher at the Norwegian centre for violence and traumatic stress research (NKVTS) and as an associate professor II at Department for health- development and personality psychology at PSI. She works in many project related to violence, trauma, and PTSD, particularly in adolescents and young adults. She is principal investigator on a project on developing and testing use of an app (“My everyday life”) as an adjunct to trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT) in adolescents. In this project we collect daily data on how traumatized adolescents experience their everyday life. More about Birkeland’s work at NKVTS.

She is a clinical psychologist from University of Bergen (2005), where she also defended her PhD thesis «Development of global self-esteem during adolescence and young adulthood» (2013).
