Ethics and Privacy

All research projects should take ethical considerations into account, but the specific ethical considerations depend on the nature of your project.

By submitting applications to Sikt, the Internal Ethical Committee or REK (Regional Ethics Committees), and following their recommendations, you ensure that the project addresses the necessary considerations regarding privacy and ethics.

Students can fill out most parts of the applications themselves, but they must include a responsible supervisor for the project in the applications to Sikt and REK. The student must also ensure that a supervisor reviews and approves the application before it is submitted.

The National Committee for Research Ethics in the Social Sciences and the Humanities (NESH) has developed discipline-specific guidelines that all social science projects should adhere to. They also have a specific guide for internet research: NESH guide for internet research.

If the project you wish to undertake will handle health information, special categories of personal data (sensitive personal data), or other personal data, there are several requirements  the project must have before you can start.
