Intercultural Competency Training

A workshop series for students, healthcare, social care and others supporting partner violence work

 

You are invited to the University of Oslo (UiO), Psychology Department (PSI)  Intercultural Competence Training Workshop Series! 

About the training

The PSI started an Intercultural Competency and Partner Violence Training series in June 2022. Join us for the September sessions which aim to provide knowledge and understanding about the social and cultural challenges encountered by those in violent relationships. A certificate of participation will be issued after the completion of training.

For Whom

Students, Psychologists, Medical personnel, Healthcare & Social care workers, and other helpers who are supporting/interested in providing the best possible adapted services for survivors of violence in close relationships.

  • It is also possible to conduct the training at your organization/preferred location

What to Expect

The workshops will consist of two sessions. Each session is approx. 3hours, making it a total of 6 hours for the whole course. It will mainly be held in English with some parts in Norwegian (i.e., text translations and group tasks).

Session 1: Identity and culture

  •    Understanding the concepts of culture
  •    Overview of the main models of culture
  • The Butterfly woman metaphor: Overview of mental health & gender-based violence

 Session 2: Intercultural competence and partner violence work

  •  Intercultural competence and its elements
  • The intersection between culture and Partner Violence
  • Strategies for intercultural sensitivity in service delivery

The workshops will be mainly in English language with some texts/group tasks in Norwegian. Please note that the training is FREE but registration is binding to enable us plan better. 

The main facilitators will be:

Joyce Anthonia Ojokojo, a psychologist and researcher specialized in Global Mobility, Diversity & Inclusion at the Department of Psychology.

Elisabeth Langdal, Director of Mental Health and Human Rights Info (MHHRI), Oslo. Co-author with years of experience in working on survivors of trauma and gender-based violence.
