Åshild Lappegard Hauge: A psychological perspective on the meaning of nature and architecture

Åshild Lappegard Hauge will present and discuss theories about why people prefer natural environments and the effects of nature on us. Furthermore, she will explore biophilic design and showcase examples of how nature can be incorporated into architecture. Lastly, she will reflect on how research and theories on environmental preferences relate to the Architectural Uproar (arkitekturopprøret) and the dissatisfaction people often feel with new architecture.

Åshild Lappegard Hauge is a professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Oslo, where she teaches qualitative research methods. She has a PhD in environmental psychology from NTNU in 2009. She works mainly within the field of environmental psychology with 1) The meaning of the environment and architecture for people’s quality of life, self-respect and identity, and 2) decision processes for energy efficiency and climate change adaptation.
