This project examines the emergence of psychotherapy among new middle classes in India.

About the project

The practice of psychotherapy has been expanding in India over the past couple of decades. Private practice has largely been the reserve of elites. Since liberalisation of the economy in 1991, the constitution of the middle class has been changing with new entrants into the middle classes and to psychotherapy.

This process shapes the practice but more importantly, it makes the new person. Who is this new person? How do they perceive their self and subjectivity? What are the pleasures and anxieties of being in the middle?

Objectives

This project seeks to understand what enables and impedes stakeholders of psychotherapy in India from becoming the persons they want to be.
