Leo Okoya is a Ugandan, Makerere University AnthEM PhD Student enrolled at the University of Nairobi sandwich the University of Olso, Norway. He received his Master’s Degree in Medical Anthropology (2021) and a Bachelor of Science Education, Biological (2010) with a major in Chemistry from Gulu University, Uganda. Leo Master’s research focused on childhood cancers based on hospital ethnography at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor, Uganda and examined how children experience and cope with Burkitt’s Lymphoma.

Okoya's doctoral research project is situated within the broader theme of anthropology of Food, Health and Environment in Crop Production. It will look at the intersections of ecology, economy and health and investigate the problems of environmental, human and planetary health in Agriculture. The anthropological study on crop production and farming communities will focus on Pesticide use among Small Scale Tomatoes Farmers in Northern Uganda.
