Hytte-writing at the Royal Hytte

Royal surroundings and beautiful nature inspire Marianne and Simone while working on the hytte book.

Klitgaarden in Skagen, Denmark.

Marianne and Simone have been hard at work preparing a popular book based on our research. We plan to have one version in Norwegian and one in English, both illustrated with photographs from the project, and we are excited to be working with an excellent publishing company to bring these to fruition.

We were able to spend a week at the Danish writers and artists’ retreat at Klitgaarden, in Skagen, which – most appropriately – was built as a Summer House for the Danish Royal family.

Even if the building itself is unlike any of the hytte we have visited for research, the peaceful surroundings and comfortable conditions are extremely conducive to progress.

Being able to get out in the fresh air to take a proper break during the day really helps the concentration too. Writing ‘towards’ each other, from one version of the book to another, has been an exciting process, which we have found to be very effective. Inspired by each others’ ideas, and sharing suggestions for which hytte-stories to tell, we have then written with our respective ‘authorly voice’, according to the audience we hope to speak to.

We were also lucky enough to spend a week at the Arvon Foundation in the beautiful British county of Shropshire, where we spent 6 days in February at the house of the late playwright John Osborne.

These two writing-weeks have been a much-needed retreat from everyday distractions, giving us time to look through all our research material in detail and pull together key ideas.

We are very grateful to have been able to use this time so effectively.
