Our project also made an appearance at the Sixth Biennial Conference of East Asian Environmental History, hosted by Kyoto University, Japan (online) on September 7-10, 2021. Global Trout member Mayumi Fukunaga was the co-organizer of the panel “Trout confined: Changes in bio‐natural and socio‐cultural ecological relations in the Age of the Anthropocene in Hida (central Japan)” on which she also presented a paper of her own, titled “Hybridizing trout imaginaries to revitalize agricultural waterscapes: Historical trajectories of trout farming and naturalization in the Gifu region, central Japan.”
GT member Heather Swanson, who has previously researched salmon in Hokkaido, Japan, served as a discussant for the panel. Overall, the event was a wonderful opportunity for the GT project to interact with other social science scholars researching trout in Japan.
