The course was organized in collaboration with the Norwegian researcher school NORSI, and it took place between Nov 27 - Dec 1 2017. TIK welcomed 16 Ph.D. students and one postdoc from nine different universities in four countries. In addition, key stakeholders from the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research and the Research Council of Norway participated in various lectures and group work.
Our intention was to create a modern course which combined lectures about the research core and research frontier with more practical exercise and debates. In addition we wanted the lecturers to represent different theoretical and empirical expertise. We sought to cover a wide range of topics within the overall theme of "how science becomes useful":
- Framing the benefits and usefulness of public research
- University-Industry relations
- Scientific research networks and innovation
- Methods for investigating cross-sector partnerships
- Entrepreneurial universities
- Uncertainty and values in research impact
- Science and innovation policy - key perspectives and our own relation to it

If we perceive there is sufficient interest, we will most likely repeat the course in two years. We are also considering making a special version of it oriented primarily at policymakers and other practitioners.
