Project description
The food industry is often criticized for wasting raw materials along the food value chain. However, those resources can be used in a variety of applications and products that confer much higher economic value. Nevertheless, the value chain of food waste and by-product valorization (from by-product sources and input to potentially commercial products) has been under-explored in innovation studies. In view of this, my PhD project explores the sustainability transition towards the bioeconomy by presenting an empirical analysis of the Norwegian food industry. More specifically, I study actual and potential value chains and identify sustainable pathways of valorizing bio-based resources such as by-products, organic wastes, rest raw materials, and side streams. The thesis examines why, how, and under what condition(s) the Norwegian food industry is likely to innovate with respect to the utilization of bio-based resources. The study tackles three main objectives: (i) studying food waste valorization along value chains; (ii) identifying actors and networks involved, and (iii) assessing regulatory frameworks that influence the food waste management issue. In other words, the study investigates the role of dynamic interplay between technological innovation, strategy, and policy in the food industry under the context of bioeconomy.
My Ph.D. study is part of the SusValueWaste project (http://www.susvaluewaste.no/). The SusValueWaste project explores the potential of organic resources by analyzing value chains inside and across different sectors of the bioeconomy. The aim of the project is to help policymakers better govern and regulate the organic-based industry, and industrial actors to identify and exploit new opportunities in the bioeconomy.
