Expertise, democracy and environmental regulation: A comparative study (completed)

The objective of this project is to improve the understanding of expert knowledge in environmental regulation, with a special focus on the tension between an expert-driven and a more democratic regulation.

About the project

This project focuses on the role of expertise in environmental regulation and to what extent and in what way it is possible to reconcile the goals of creating environmental regulation that is scientifically sound and democratically inclusive, i.e. regulation which is based on the use of expert knowledge but also open for public influence. The project studies four different environmental problems: climate change, long-range transboundary air pollution, nuclear waste management and biodiversity. Three different levels are studied: international, national and local levels. By a comparative approach, the project will generate knowledge of wider relevance than the studied areas.
