Nowhere is the imprint of innovation as visible and impressive as when it comes to people’s health. The last century’s large and small medical innovations have eradicated some diseases, made others more manageable and generally prolonged our lives and improved our physical health. Medical innovation is a complex phenomenon found at the interplay between science, technology and medical practice, and it involves networked actors such as healthcare personnel and their organisations, firms, public agencies and patient organisations. Although efficient collaboration between heterogeneous partners is recognised as key to innovation in this sector, we lack a good understanding of the complexities of establishing and running such partnerships and potentially how such partnerships can be nurtured. Can synergies be facilitated or are relationships marked by enduring tensions?
This conference brings together leading experts on innovation in life sciences and will present results from a Scandinavian research project on collaborative innovation in the life sciences – the STILS Project
