The last decade there has been prevailing attention towards the possibilities of biotechnology to solve grand societal challenges. However, with its inclusion of engineering and digitalization biotechnology raise new questions about science and contemporary knowledge production. The promises are high, as are the risks, the field of biotechnology still being an emergent field. Consequently, the principles of responsible research and innovation are supposed to underpin and govern all activities undertaken in Norway’s flagship for biotechnology: the Centre for Digital Life Norway (DLN). The concept of responsible research and innovation (RRI) is argued to bring new values into research projects, such as reflexivity, anticipation, responsiveness, and deliberation. Yet, the question is not frequently asked about the organizational and infrastructural conditions that are necessary for such values to emerge, such as project management, planning, and the basic organizational and infrastructural developments needed to sustain such projects. This project seeks to explore conditions of possibilities for RRI to take hold in DLN, how is RRI enabled and enacted in the centre? How (if at all) does the concept add to governance and knowledge production? A declared objective of the centre is convergence through digitalization, making digital infrastructures a matter of concern (Latour 2004).The promise of the digital infrastructures is also reflected in a wider socio-political context were states of today are making substantial investments in digital infrastructures in the name of the public good. But, how can digital infrastructures be justified as a public good? And, how (if at all) does digitalization influence knowledge production and the notion of responsible research and innovation? Through the case study of the Centre for Digital Life Norway, this project will explore the above posed questions. This project is part of the Res Publica project
